PROJECT OVERVIEW
Construction of the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino parking ramp began in October and was completed within 13 months, despite several challenges along the way. This $11.4 million joint project between the City of Sioux City and Hard Rock Hotel & Casino created a 535-stall parking garage, sitting on 498 auger-cast piles, each 65 feet deep, and primarily built with precast structural components.
One of the key challenges of the project was constructing the over-road parking and walkway while keeping traffic active on 3rd Street, a busy main corridor. We successfully minimized disruption, completing the work with only a brief nine-day road closure for safety, allowing traffic to continue for the majority of the project. Early in the project, we encountered unexpected obstructions, including old construction debris and utilities that required us to adjust our schedule and coordination efforts. In total, we relocated eight different utilities, ranging from high-voltage telephone poles to a 24-inch water main, and removed construction debris for 56 piles. Despite these conflicts, we maintained the project schedule, demonstrating our ability to adapt and problem-solve on the fly.
Working adjacent to a high-traffic, 4-lane road also posed significant logistical challenges. By carefully planning and coordinating our efforts, we constructed a 4-story, 80x130-foot structure over the road, with only nine days of road closure. Additionally, through contract negotiations, the project started one month later than anticipated, pushing a large portion of the concrete foundation work into the winter months. By strategically planning the auger-cast pile installation, we saved the owner three weeks of winter-related costs and stayed on schedule.
It features a pedestrian walkway over Third Street, allowing guests to cross safely from the parking ramp to the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino without encountering traffic. This project not only improves convenience for Hard Rock and Tyson Events Center visitors but also highlights our ability to manage complex logistics, maintain schedules, and minimize disruption to the community.
